Net Atlantic Announces 2013 Scholarship Award Winners
Salem, MA – July 11, 2013 - Net Atlantic congratulates Haley Pelletier of St. Mary's High School in Lynn, MA, and Alexa Jordan of Danvers High School in Danvers, MA on winning the Net Atlantic 2013 Scholarship Awards.
For the fifth straight year, as part of its dedication to giving back to the local community, Net Atlantic held its annual college scholarship contest for high school students attending public or private schools in Salem, Peabody, Lynn, Lynnfield, Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, and Swampscott. This year, for the first time, a $2,000 college scholarship was available in each of two separate categories: Academic and Leadership Achievement, and Science and Technology Achievement.
Eligible candidates were required to graduate from high school in 2013, maintain a GPA above 3.0, and plan to pursue a four-year college degree in business, marketing, public relations, communications, computer science, or information technology. To qualify, they were asked to submit an application, including an essay in which they could share their accomplishments, passions, and intelligence.
"We wish both Haley and Alexa every success as they begin the next phase of their lives this fall," said Net Atlantic CEO Andrew Lutts. "We know these remarkable young women will achieve all they set out to do, and more."
Science and Technology Achievement Award Winner
Haley Pelletier, St. Mary's High School, Lynn, MA
Haley is Net Atlantic’s first-ever winner of the Science and Technology Achievement Award. Some of her achievements include participation in several clubs, including Science League and Math Team, volunteering at Camp Sunshine in Maine (a camp for children with life-threatening diseases) and Binky Patrol (a non-profit organization that donates and delivers blankets to children in trauma). Haley also helped her fellow students as a geometry tutor.
When she was nominated team captain of the Science Team in both her junior and senior years, it gave her the confidence she needed to explore the field of science more deeply. Through her participation in the Science Team, Haley has built everything from a golf ball sorter, catapult, tight rope walker, and unique playable instruments. She loves the thrill of competition, and the reward of building something from start to finish.
This fall, Haley will attend Olin College in Needham, MA, and is considering electrical or computer engineering as her main area of concentration.
Academic and Leadership Achievement Award Winner
Alexa Jordan, Danvers High School, Danvers, MA
Throughout her high school career, Alexa showed her leadership skills in her roles as VP of both Student Council and National Honors Society and PR Manager for the National English Honor Society, and as a coach and volunteer with the Special Olympics.
In addition, she participated in extracurricular activities such as the math team, field hockey team, competitive dancing, key club, and DECA business club, as well as volunteering with the Hospice and Alzheimer's Associations and the Danvers Field Hockey YMCA Camp.
Alexa will attend the University of South Carolina in September 2013, where she'll pursue a degree in sports and entertainment management and marketing.
